History & Constitution
Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council (MSPC) is a statutory body constituted by the Government of Maharashtra under the provisions of the Pharmacy Act 1948 (a Central Act). It consists of 6 members elected by Registered Pharmacists amongst themselves, five members nominated by the Government of Maharashtra, one member elected by the Maharashtra Medical Council and three Ex-Officio Members.
The functioning of MSPC is in accordance with the said Act and the Rules framed by the Maharashtra Government, namely the Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council Rules, 1969. Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council came into existence on 1.09.1964.
Registration Function
The prime function of the Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council is to grant registration to eligible applicants complying with the provisions of section 32(2) of the Pharmacy Act and to enforce the necessary provisions of the Pharmacy Act 1948. Presently there are more than 3 lakh 80,000 registered pharmacists on the records of MSPC.
In Maharashtra there are more than 400 D.Pharm colleges and more than 200 B.Pharm colleges, and a few Pharm.D colleges approved by PCI, New Delhi. Applicants passing from these colleges apply to MSPC through its online portal.
Office & Online Services
Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council has office premises at Mulund West, Mumbai. MSPC has its own website www.mspcindia.org. The process of registration, renewal and allied processes are made online, offering the convenience of online submission of forms, documents and remittance of online fees by applicants. Application related and approval related SMS and mails are sent to applicants through the online system.
At the Council, all the data of registered pharmacists is computerized, and a registered pharmacist can view the details and status of their registration from the “Search Registered Pharmacist” section on the website. The registration certificate granted after approval of a new registration application has security features and bears the scanned photo and signature of the applicant.
Pharmacist's Professional Profile (PPP)
Apart from issuing the registration certificate, the Council also issues the Pharmacist's Professional Profile (PPP) as a Professional Identity Card — a smart card with a QR CODE — to applicants / registered pharmacists who wish to apply for the same.
Drug Information Centre (DIC)
Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council has been very proactive in upgrading the pharmacy profession by starting its Drug Information Centre, which is the first one in the West Zone of the country. The DIC has successfully completed WHO funded projects and answers appropriate queries in an authentic and unbiased way.
Education & Professional Development
In this world of fierce competition, taking into consideration the need to update the knowledge of its stakeholders, the Council has started refresher courses and patient counselling courses for registered pharmacists. The Council’s DIC has framed the content for such courses with the help of teachers, professors of pharmacy colleges and experts from this field.
Also, considering the difficulties faced by registered pharmacists in physically attending such courses due to geographical distances at any venue, the Council has developed an online refresher course for registered pharmacists.
E-Newsletters & Webinars
With advances in information technology, it is the endeavour of MSPC’s DIC to send e-newsletters to registered pharmacists on their available e-mail IDs, related to various diseases, drugs, etc. Especially during Covid-19, the Council conducted various webinars for registered pharmacists and received a positive response for the same.
